Housing in Canada's big cities

This source provides an update on housing affordability and availabity in Calgary, enabling a broader understanding of housing supply trends, gaps and implications and specifically, the current state of the affordable housing segment.

According to this source, Calgary’s housing supply differs substantially from other Canadian cities. Among the major cities in Canada, Calgary has the highest rates of homeownership and single-family housing, and the lowest supply of purpose-built rental, subsidized housing and co-operative housing. The result is a well-served higher-income population and an underserved lower-income population, and while this lower-income population is small, compared to the rest of Calgary, their housing options are severely limited.

The recommendation of this research is that strategic initiatives are necessary to produce affordable housing in Calgary. Plans to address affordability concerns through the addition of market housing stock are likely not sufficient to close the gap in housing choice for low-income Calgarians.
