Deinsitutionalization

Deinstitutionalization takes many forms; the ones most commonly linked with homelessness are discharge from hospitals (or overall closure of mental institutions), aging out of child welfare systems, and release from prison. People exiting these systems and institutions can be dealing with trauma, mental illness, social stigma, lack of preparedness for the social and economic or social realities of life outside the system, and barriers to employment such as prison records or long gaps in their employment history. As a result, it can be difficult for those without strong support networks to find work and housing, and many end up experiencing homelessness during the transition.
